What does Rola mean?
Rola means “Rolling Highway”. At special terminals complete trucks are loaded onto the train and the drivers travel in the Pullman. Since 2001, we have been operating Rola between Freiburg im Breisgau (D) and Novara (I) and from January 2011 we also operate the Rola between Basel Kleinhüningen Hafen and Lugano. Thus we provide both an economic and ecological option for crossing the Swiss Alps. Rola enables secure and cost effective progress during the day and at night.
Input to transport companies is limited to planning and dispatching. Unlike unaccompanied combined transport any logistical changes and investments are necessary. Virtually every truck approved on European roads can be transported by Rola.
What benefits does it have?
Rola is a complementary offer to truckloads of bulk commodities, to swap bodies and containers. It is particularly suitable for time-critical shipments, just-in-time deliveries and for delicate and valuable goods that require continuous monitoring. We carry road vehicles with all types of goods, chemical products, high-tech components, spare parts, perishable foods and air freight.
Despite the night and Sunday driving ban, with Rola the Alps can be crossed in both directions around the clock, almost 365 days a year. It allows transit through Switzerland from EU country to EU country without time-consuming customs clearance at the border. In addition, the ride is a rest for truck drivers who can sit back behind the wheel immediately after arrival at the destination terminal. To date, over 500,000 trucks and their drivers have benefited from these advantages.
